June 20, 2014..The Pendulum Returns, or better yet - Return of the Pendulum.....

The Pendulum.......We finally found something about the pendulum that we can understand.

This is the fancy way to explain it....

As explained by Galileo, we know that the period of a pendulum can be described mathematically by the following equation:
Where:
P = period; which is the time for one pendulum swing [sec]
l = length from the fixed point at the top of the pendulum to the center of mass of the bob [m]
g = gravitational constant (9.8 m per sec2)
π ≈ 3.14 (dimensionless constant)
Note that this equation does not include terms for the mass of the pendulum or the angle it swings through. The only factor that significantly affects the swing of a pendulum on Earth is the length of its string.

What this really means is that the bob is pulled by force. What keeps the pendulum going is inertia. Inertia is that an object will stay motionless or in movement UNLESS it is interrupted by an outside force. It means an object will keep going until something like friction will stop it. Or if it's a car, brakes will stop it. Or if there's no air friction or you forgot to apply the brakes, you'll get a ticket! So make sure you apply the brakes!!! PHEW!!!!!

Look! We're on a Pendulum!!!
So..when you swing, you are a pendulum! When you go down, the thing that makes you move, pushes you back up until either you stop pumping you legs to let air friction stop you or you apply your brakes (your legs on the ground) to stop. (Ok, editor's light bulb just went on - I never understood inertia)

I get this now!!! Woo-hoo!!!

Moving on......

I have 3 baby watermelons!!!! They are only about a 1/2 big right now. But it's as much as we've had! I'm guessing starting them in early spring really helped!!! I have a feeling we'll have lots and lots of watermelons this year!!!
isn't it cute??

Oh, and Mom and I kinda entered a contest to help name a loggerhead sea turtle for the Tour de Turtles. (http://www.tourdeturtles.org/) The name I choose was SEAlestia. A spin off of CElestia, which means heavenly. My inspiration was My Little Pony, of course! Yes, I'm a Bronie and proud of it! We'll see next week if they pick my idea, which is only 2 days away.

Here is a cool video about sea turtles. The man talking (in white - David Godfrey) is the man that sent me that cool stuff from the conservancy!!!! His last name Godfrey kinda sounds like Galifrey (Dr. Who's home planet)

Guess what?? MINI FIGURES ONLINE CAME OUT!!!!! This is the game I've been waiting for since I got the Legos magazine in May! I played it from 3 until dinnertime last night, because Daddy forgot about me. hehehehehe.....Oh by the way, dinner was DELICIOUS last night. Grandmama made steak and baked potatoes....and I ate about 17 or 18 french peas, but I can't speak french yet. I did speak spanish tho.....Hola! La nina es bebe.....Better yet, La nina es beben aqua. Cool, huh? Thanks, Rosetta Stone!!!!

That's all for now.
Stay tuned 'til tomorrow!!

June 18, 2014 ...Not much to say....

I was a little Aspie today, so not much to talk about.

We found a documentary on the Galapagos Islands. I have a whole bunch of educational videos for the summer. Grumble..........:p.........;-)

We're still looking on stuff about the pendulum.

And we looked at museums from around the world today! About 20! We did a lot of research on the one that holds the Mona Lisa. It's called the Louvre. Here is an essay about why people like art. (It would be easier if it were just called a word-doc.....)

Here it is!

Why do humans cherish art?

Art teaches us. It teaches us about the past. It also looks beautiful.

There are hundreds, maybe thousands of art museums. That's amazing, isn't it? In 2013, millions of people from around the world went to visit these museums.

Today we looked through the Louvre. The Louvre is in Paris, France. One of their most famous paintings is The Mona Lisa, painted by Leonardo Davinci. They have thousands of other paintings and sculptures.

The construction of the original building of the Louvre started about 1190 a.d. The original building was built for defense. It was then used for the home of royalty.

That's just one example of museums. All these buildings are built to house paintings and sculptures and ancient artifacts.

Why do humans prize art? I think it's because it makes them feel happy.  It gives humans a view of the world around them. Art can take you anywhere in your imagination.

My personal thoughts - art should be appreciated for what it is. I enjoy art, but I do not like going into museums. Perhaps when I get older, I'll appreciate museums more. But for now, I'd rather just look at art at home.

That's all I'm gonna write today.

Stay tuned 'til tomorrow!

June 17, 2014.....We missed a day!!!

Yesterday, was World Sea turtles day! Also, it's conservation biologist's Archie Carr's birthday! He is the founder of the STC - the Sea Turtle Conservancy. He is considered the world's leading authority on sea turtles. I think he knows more than I do about sea turtle.
me making a poster

Voila! I hung my poster at the road!

I also made kabobles! - I made the dip with strawberry jelly, sour cream and cream cheese - MMMMMMM......A kaboble is different sort of foods on a stick. I made bananas, blueberries, watermelon and strawberries - for flag day!!! Strawberries were 1st because they were the strongest. Here's a picture of what my complete snack looked like. I made one for me, my Grandmama and my Dad.
I'm wearing a sticker. Do you like my platter?

Hey, guess what!!!!!! I finished 5th ELA!!!! I took the test and got a 90!!!!!! Almost done with school. I wish my Mom wouldn't make me do stuff during the summer.......:(

Oh, by the way, I keep forgetting......thanks Aunt Donna for the cards! Me and Lilly were REALLY excited!!!!

And congratulations to Maddie for GRADUATING!!! WAY TO GO!!!

That's all for now.....I'm gonna go read to Grandmama...

Stay tuned 'til tomorrow!!!

June 13th, 2014....One Unlucky-Lucky day......

So, we were looking for pendulum stuff. And we came across this vid about service tension. (on khanacademy.org - go there for anything you ever wanted to know). And boy was the middle of our experiment hard! We had to do it a lot of times in order for it to work! But that's what science is.....

The beginning and the end were a success, so mission accomplished. Now we are doing our write-up.

We were trying to prove the Marangoni effect. The Marangoni effect explains surface tension. Like, how the water-bugs create air bubbles to walk across water. And this also happens with water lizards.

First, we cut out a boat out of cardboard that won't take in water. HINT: don't use cardboard - use styrofoam - styrofoam does not take up water and it works better.

this is the complete boat. little house with a key notch in front of me.

Then we filled a small bowl with soap. Any kind of soap is good - hand soap might work. Then we filled a big bowl with water. We put the big bowl of water - CAREFULLY!  You don't want your boat to do a nose dive. Then, we put some soap on the end of a q-tip and drop the soap on the q-tip on the circly part of the boat. WATCH!!!!! It will eject and will move around!

The soap breaks the surface tension of the water and propels the boat along! Try it with black pepper and see what happens! Pretty cool!!!!

We're still gonna look for pendulum stuff on Monday. And we're gonna move our pendulum to the front yard so the wind can catch it. Right now it's not moving too much.......

This experiment was pretty fun! Hope you try it and I hope it works!!!

Stay tuned 'til Monday!

June 9, 2014 Ballet!!!!!

I did my first ballet show!! It was fun!!!!! I was just an entsy bit nervous. I wasn't ON stage, I was nervous in the dressing room because of all the noise and the commotion down there! Someone has to tell those girls to BE QUIET! I wish Kim were there to keep them in line. Jeesh, it was noisy in there. Don't make a boy nervous by making noise. I'll just attack!

Me on stage!!!

What do you do when your nervous? I pace back and forth at a very quick rate....I'm also a chatterbox when I'm nervous but that was only during the hockey game I watched with Meggie...

I was relieved after the ballet. Cuz then all my nerves calmed down. You know how hard it is to calm down before you go on stage and around all those noisy girls? It's very hard. Anyway.....

One more thing for today....I went to Grandma's and Grandpa's house for dinner after the show! I ate a triple cheese sandwich with butter, American, swiss and provolone cheese. It was DELISH - perfection! We also had chocolate cake for dessert - I loved the frosting! Bubba and Meggie came for dinner and Grandmama also came for dinner. It was a fun time....

Now if you'll excuse me, I'm going to have snack, chocolate milk and TV.

Stay tuned 'til tomorrow!!

June 5, 2014 Pooped out

This week I'm pooped! I didn't go to fencing because I got a boo-boo on my toe. I went to dance yesterday and today I had a rehearsal.

Do you know what I did to get a boo-boo? I was running, hit the top of my toe on a nail and knocked off a piece skin. I started yelling when I saw my toe was bleeding. It was throbbing for an hour! And it bleed A LOT. But, the next day I took a long bath to get the blood out, put a liquid band aid and went to ballet. I hurt when I pressed my foot down at ballet. But at the break I made sure I rubbed it and that made it feel better.

Oh, today I went to a baseball game! The Bisons won! I went with my Dad. The kids that my Mom were with were Lilly, Gabriel, Camryn and Autumn. These are kids from Lilly's class. My old class was there too. I was nice to see everyone.

Next, I picked up my Grandma from the airport! The airline lost her 2nd bag in Tampa! Jeez! I wonder how that happened!

Next, I had to go to ballet again for my rehearsal. It went pretty good! I got out pretty early.

This week was pretty fun. I made a pendulum! Well, we need to research this more and I'll tell you how it works later.
making the pendulum

Pendulum complete!

That all for now, I guess.

Stay tuned 'til tomorrow!

May the force be with you ALWAYS!!!!
