03/31/2014...Child passed out...

For some reason, both kids would not fall asleep last night and were both up until midnight. So, I'm filling in. Sorry - I realize I'm not as cute....

Anyway, William got a "sorry, we don't like your invention" letter from a nature reserve down in FL. It's not stopping us though! We will revise what's he's done. We were very polite in our letter and stated that we will contact them again when we've made some changes. So, today we did a ton of research and will continue to do so. If anyone knows anyone who know anything about saving the sea turtles, send them our way! I'm sure he'll fill you in tomorrow.

And for your viewing pleasure, I found this webcam today. Will spent a good part of his day just watching....it's pretty fascinating.

Enjoy!

William's Mom and editor...

Thursday, March 27, 2014

March 27, 2014 This time it's from Lilly, not William

Editors note: William is taking a break today. Lilly, his twin sister (older by 2 minutes) will be filling in....enjoy!

This is me last year riding Scooter
Hi! I'm Lilly, William's twin sister. He doesn't believe that I'm older than him. But I am - by 2 minutes!

Let me tell you all about me!

First, I extremely love dance! Me and mom are going to go see Romeo and Juliet. Romeo and Juliet is a ballet. I know some of the dancers. I know Sergio - he plays Romeo - he's my teacher. I know Heidi - she plays Lady Capulet - she's also my teacher. And I know Silvina! She is professional ballet dancer and she'll dancing Juliet. I'm VERY excited about seeing this. I hope I see some of my friends. Well, of course I will see Eli - Eli is my friend from dance. She is my teachers' daughter. Here's a picture of her:
That's Eli

I have 2 lose teeth! 1 top molar to the right and one bottom canine to the left.

I take voice lessons. I enjoy them. Someday I want to sing with the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra. My teacher's name is Mrs. Goodrich. I like her. Did you know there is a street named after her in Clarence, NY? That is weird. Don't you think??

Today I went to the orthodontist because I needed my braces moved to a different spot on my teeth. It hurt when they took the braces off. The good news is, 1 or 2 more appointments I am getting my retainers! MY BRACES WILL COME OFF!!!!!! Ah, oh...It hurts, very bad! But, it's worth it.

School is going great! Although I get bored at times, I still pay attention. My teacher's name is Mr. Renzo and my ELA teacher's name is Mrs. Amoia. My average is a 94.25.

That's all I have. Maybe I'll do this again sometime. The next time I do, I'll have a surprise in stock for you....

Stay tuned 'til next time!

Be cool.....

March 26, 2014 Crystals!

 http://video.about.com/chemistry/Borax-Crystal-Snowflakes.htm

That video above is about making crystal snowflakes using borax. You should try this out! It's really fun and only takes 1 night and a few minutes to crystallize.

Here's what borax is....the chemical name for borax is sodium tetraborate. The box below shows the percent of each element. Borax has boron in it. Boron is used for many things. Borax is in your detergent. Boron is used to control nuclear reactions. Boron is important food for all green plants. Boron is the metal section on the periodic table but is not a metal. It is a metalloid - it just thinks it's a metal. Boron is very confused and complicated. But, it makes crystals.

Percent composition by element

Element  Symbol  Atomic Mass  # of Atoms  Mass Percent
SodiumNa22.989770212.056%
HydrogenH1.00794205.286%

This experiment actually worked!!!! I'll do more of these...

I went to ballet and chess today.

I decided that I want to go to the spring chess/soccer program. I want try and go to chess competition. I want to ask my coach if I'm good enough. I have to play a lot of chess before I compete.

In ballet I did some barre work. And we practiced our end of year dance. At the end of the year there is a [conservatory] show. We're in it! I'm excited about it! It'll be at Nichols school in Buffalo. People should come and see me!

That's all for now...

Stay tuned 'til tomorrow.

March 25, 2014 Have a nice day!

Editor's note: I was looking around the internet - still trying to find a link between Autism and aliens. That in itself is a story.....I found this wonderful blog and asked the owner's permission to post it on here. I hope everyone goes over and gives it a read. It's very enlightening. Enjoy!

http://diaryofanalien1.blogspot.com/2013/08/what-i-wish-people-knew-about-aspergers.html

Here's a story (about me):

                                            William

My name is William Carl Benz. I live in Angola, New York. Angola is near Lake Erie. We’re close to the lake. It’s just one block away, one drive away. I love living here because we get all four seasons - winter, summer, fall and spring.
It’s fun living near the lake. We can swim in it! I like playing in the parks. My favorite one is the state park. We take our bikes there. The playground is fun. There are a couple of slides. The beach is big and sandy and rocky. The water is cool and shallow, and sometimes deep. It gets deep when we go into the cold parts – very cold parts. We usually go there in the spring and fall because we don’t have to pay then.
My house is cozy. It’s big. I don’t really know how I feel about it. I just feel cold right now.
My favorite room is my bedroom. First of all, I have my own room. I don’t have to share.  My bed is comfortable. It has a lot of games in it. I have my own desk and nightstand. The nightstand has all my precious things in it and my sticker collection. The nightstand used to be Daddy’s when he was a little kid. That makes it special to me. It makes me feel better when my Daddy doesn’t snuggle me at night and I’m about to go to sleep. I feel safe in my bedroom.
I believe in aliens. At night, sometimes I think I see a couple outlines of shadows. I think there are monsters in my closet. I sleep with my teddy bear named Teddy, which I had since I was a baby and he helps me sleep. I like to set up security in my room at night and in my bed. I bring swords, guns and alarms in my bed – they’re toys. It’s in case I need to scare an alien or two. The toy guns are in case I have to shoot some darts at a few monsters. And you won’t want to scare me when I have a sword in my hand! I’m a fencer and I know how to fence.
Fencing is one of my favorite hobbies. Fencing makes me calm. Fencing also makes me excited.
My favorite books that I read is Geronimo Stilton. I like them because they are funny. The main character is a mouse. That's Geronimo. These books are fiction. They are adventure books. I have a collection of the books. And you hardly see any people except for the hardcovers. His hardcover books are in the kingdom of fantasy. It's a place where he ends up when he has a stomach ache.
I wanna talk about my family. My sister has wacky hair – the one that thinks she older. But, we're the same age! I love my mommy! My mommy cooks good food. My daddy? He works with computers. And then there's my big sister. My big sister is the coolest. Now for Brad. He's my big brother. He's more of a sith than a jedi. Just like I'm more of a jedi than a sith. My whole family? Both the White's and the Benzes? The Benzes are small – that's my Dad's side. And the White's are my Mom's side – they are HUGE! And I mean that side is big! I mean number of people. I think they're all cool.

A work in progress....

My Imagination by William Benz

Where do I begin? Do you know what I said that? I have way too much in my head.

My imagination is big. It has all of outer space in it. It even has aliens in it, friendly aliens like from Star Wars.

I close my eyes and I see space gas stations. Which I have to say is pretty weird. Unless you have a star ship and run out of gas on the way to the Star Wars galaxy. It looks the same as any other gas station on earth. It is possible, except the people who work there are aliens.

I close my eyes and I see a lot of super heroes. One of them is Iron Man. Captain America too, Superman and Batman and all of the Marvel and DC super heroes.

I make up a few super heroes. They are a bit unusual. There are about 100 that I make up. One of them has the powers of a penguin, except he can shoot fish out of his flipper. Very unusual.

I close my eyes and I see lots of friends. I have multi imaginations for each friend. My favorite is where everybody meets. When we meet, we all fight super villains because all of my friends are super heroes.

I close my eyes and I see space thruways. I know that sounds pretty strange, but it's true. Personally, I have a star fighter of my own. I go visit my friends on Coruscant.  We fight the Sith. Apparently, we're Jedi.

I close my eyes and I see dragons. Some are evil and some are good. I lost track of them. I'll have to check in my imagination tonight and see where they are….

March 20, 2014 Spring Finally!

The weather outside was snowy although it was the first day of spring.

Today was the science fair! My jaw got a workout from talking. Everybody seemed to like my invention. Mrs. Eastman (principal) told me that she loves turtles, especially loggerheads. She has a tattoo of a loggerhead turtle on her wrist! She said that if there were prizes, I'd be in first place because I want to save her favorite animal! That made me happy! And the science teacher from high school recognised me from last year!

I got to see my friends Josh and Kaden. They had science experiments too. My favorite experiment was the one that Josh's brother was doing. It was kinda like a telephone, but it was a cup phone. It was 2 red solo cups attached by a string. You speak into the cup and the other person can hear your voice. There was a rock candy demonstration. Someone made rock candy from scratch! I wonder if it took awhile for the rock candy to harden. People liked Lilly's game too!

Here's some pictures from tonite. There were many people there.

March 19, 2014 FINALLY

Editor's note: Didjya miss us?? Sorry - we've been busy working on our science fair projects. They are finally finished! Instead of William writing tonight, I'm posting short (5 minute) videos of each kid giving a presentation. This was mostly so I know, THEY know what they're talking about tomorrow night....Good luck, kids!

3.14.14....HAPPY PI DAY!!!!!!!

Today is Pi day! Pi is the circumference any circle divided by it's diameter. Everybody the Greeks are the first ones to figure it out, but read this!

Usually in math we write pi with the Greek letter π, which is the letter "p" in Greek. You pronounce it "pie", like apple pie. It is called pi because π is the first letter of the Greek word "perimetros" or perimeter. But it was not the Ancient Greeks who first discussed the value of pi. Mathematicians in the Babylonian Empire, about 2000 BC, had already figured out that pi was about 25/8, or 3.125. By about 1700 BC, in theMiddle Kingdom, Egyptian mathematicians calculated pi to be about 3.16. People have been gradually getting closer ever since, with early contributions from mathematicians working in ChinaIndia, and the Islamic Empire. By 263 AD, the Chinese mathematician Liu Hui had calculated that pi was 3.141. (from Kidipede website: http://scienceforkids.kidipede.com/)

This is Pi to the millionth. http://www.exploratorium.edu/pi/pi_archive/Pi10-6.html. If you to print this, you would have 165 pages of numbers! Pi actually has over 5 trillion digits! That's very, very huge!

Pi is very funny. Why do people make such a  big deal out of it? It's only used for one thing - for a circumference of a circle. I have no idea why that's so important.

Today is also Albert Einstein's birthday. He came up with the theory of relativity. I know what a theory is, but do not know that is....He didn't start speaking until he was 4 years old. I only started when I was 3. He played the violin and he didn't like to wear socks. I think he was pretty cool. He was also smart.

Albert Einstein. I think I have his hair.

Albert Einstein as a kid. He sorta looks like Daddy.
We went outside today. As least it wasn't a blizzard or refrigerated....It was nice out today. We planted watermelon, lavender and wild flower seeds. They're in pots in the dining room. I really want watermelon. We got the baby ones that can grow on a trellis. So hopefully this year we'll be able to grow some.

Torture!!! I pushing.

Us planting seeds.

That's all for now. I want my snack. And I'm sleepy...

Stay tuned 'til tomorrow.

March 13, 2014 Lines, Points and Quadrilaterals...

This morning, we worked on point and line symmetry. This was NOT easy. Point Symmetry is when every part has a matching part: the same distance from the central point. but in the opposite direction. (We copied this.) For instance, this animated card shows the Q's on opposite sides and upside down from one another. We're going to work on this some more because I just can't understand it.

The Q's are opposite and equi-distant from the midpoint (Mom's words)

Line symmetry is pretty easy. It's when something looks the same on each side when you fold it. Or another name for this is reflection or mirror symmetry.

Here's a pic of line symmetry. Enjoy the view of butterfly wings. They are the same on both sides.

We worked on this for 2 hours. And we're probably going to work on it another hour tomorrow.

Spanish, nothing much to talk about. I just repeated stuff that I learned already. I'm starting to pick things up.

We saw turkey vultures this morning! They were in the woods next to our house! They were warming up by stretching their wings in the sun. It was exciting! They were gigantic! I went online and I learned that they go down south for the winter only times and up north for the summer only times. They migrate. They only eat dead things. This is sorta good for the environment because they get rid of carcuses. Here's a video.....

March 12, 2014 Snow day...

It's the editor here.....Today was a snow day for Lilly. Now,  I could have made them both do school work or we could just have fun. We did a whole lotta nothing and just had some fun. Oh, I did make them help me clean up a bit. Hey, that was 4 more hands to help with stuff that doesn't get done during the regular week..   :)

So this is what we started working on.....it's just a little vid of them being silly....perhaps we'll work on it in the future...

p.s....this is in no way good...

March 11, 2014 Putty

Hallo, Deutschland! Ich hoffe, Sie genießen mein Blog!

Today was too long!

I worked on math this morning. I am learning about symmetry. Symmetry is something that looks the same when you fold it. One of my favorite designs that was symmetrical was a star. Stars are beautiful and has 5 symmetrical lines. Here's something that's NOT symmetrical, my sister's head! I really liked working on this. It's part of geometry. Geometry is one of my favorite things. I like shapes. I understand them a bit more than numbers. I like shapes because I can see them. Numbers confuse me.

We went to the state park this afternoon. It was a field trip, get it??? WE SAW ROBINS!!!!!
I got a good picture of a robin
We walked down to the beach. The beach was very icy, sandy and wet. We saw gigantic ice and sand hills. I climbed to the top of one. It was hard! The sides were really steep.
From the top!

Me climbing

Breath-taking view, huh?

Me near the top.

Dear Uncle Buck! We saw  A LOT of dear poop! You were right about how many deer are down there! Gee-sh!

We saw a water fall near the ponds. And more scat.

We made putty today! We made it with glue and liquid detergent. The chemical names are polyvinyl acetate and sodium tetraborate. This explains it better - we got this from http://www.omsi.edu/sites/all/FTP/files/chemistry/NH-PDF/NH-F1-ChooseOoze.pdf

Borax detergent has the chemical name sodium tetraborate
(NaB4O7). In water, the molecules of sodium tetraborate
separate into sodium (Na+) and borate B(OH)4- ions. The borate
ion is formed like a large letter “X” with a boron atom in the
center and four oxygen and hydrogen groups (–OH groups)
extending from it.

The borate ion is reactive and connects two different
glue molecules. The –OH groups on the borate ion
connect to acetate groups in the glue molecule.
When this reaction happens across two glue
molecules, the glue becomes cross-linked, and the
glue molecules cannot slide past each other as
easily. This makes the liquid glue change from an
easily flowing liquid to a stiff ooze.

Making the putty

mixing

almost to the final product

Final product!
It's still very sticky so we are waiting for it to dry. It feels like play-doh. I'm gonna try to play with it tomorrow. It was my most successful experiment.

gotta go to bed!

That's all for now.

March 10, 2014 Beats me.....

I started writing a story about myself today. I didn't get very far. It was easy to write. I'll post it when I'm done. I'm also working on Penguin Man, remember him? I think I wrote about him but we can't find it in a blog....Penguin Man is a penguin super hero. You'll find out more later on.....

Oh, by the way, the thermometer didn't work and it spilled. I think I'll try it once more...

My aspirin experiment is working. But, it's not as exciting as it said. It was supposed to turn into spikes going up the glass. Didn't happen.....
My aspirin experiment so far
Today we tried to make silly putty. Didn't work quite as well as we expected. We're gonna try to do it again. We need to find better directions. (editor's note: Pinterest isn't always correct.) Here's some pics..

YUK - it felt icky

Hey, guess what??? Neglia Ballet used my blog - well, one of the Wednesday blogs - on their website! Made me a bit excited! Here it is! Please look! You should look at their whole website. Some of the pictures my Mom and Dad did. And Neglia is a great place to go. You could probably sign up there.

That's pretty much all I have on my mind.

March 8, 2014 Bowling!!!

Today we went to the store to get stuff for my science project. We picked up a whole lot of stuff like sand, fake eggs (we're going to paint them), plexiglass and LED lights. I have pretty much almost everything. We still need a solar panel and electric circuit to complete my project. We will start working on my project tomorrow. If it works, maybe I can take it to the science museum to see if we can really use it where the sea turtles are hatched.
most of the group

We went to the bowling alley. It was my Aunt Jo's birthday! It was awesome! My cousin Victoria, my Aunt Karen and Uncle Keith, my Uncle Buck and Amber, Megan, my Mom and Dad and Lilly, my cousins Kris and Kim and of course Aunt Jo and Uncle Ron were there! Everybody played good. It was a good idea to do that. Happy Birthday, Aunt Jo!
Me bowling
Next we had birthday cake at my Aunt K's house. Playing with Vicky was fun! My Uncle Keith has a train set downstairs. It is HUGE! It takes up the whole middle of the downstairs! Today, Uncle Keith gave me a Lionel HO sized train set! I'm ecstatic about this!  Aunt Jo is fun! Everybody there was funny or cuddly if you want! Here's some pics...
Vicky's gifts.

Birthday cake time!

Yesterday nothing very much happened. I was very grumpy yesterday. And that made me uncooperative. Mom got angry because nothing was getting accomplished. So, we packed up our cameras and went to look for eagles. We've seen an eagle twice in Lakeview, so we took a VERY long drive yesterday to see if we could get a picture of the eagle. It sorta was boring. I only like bird watching when I'm home in the house. It was a fail. All we found were crows and hawks. Maybe, just maybe, I'll try it again. Mom NEVER gives up. (Sometimes this is not a good thing, cuz I don't like being cramped in a car without my nook.)

On a serious note, this little boy is really sick. This is his Mom's blog. You should read this. We're going to buy some bracelets. We should keep him in our thoughts. I feel sorry for the Mom. Cuz personally, I'd be sad if anybody that I loved died.

That's all for now.

Stay tuned 'til Monday!

March 6, 2014 Binary Shuffle

I went to speech this morning. I got to see Mrs. Sanna and 2 kids from my old class. It made me a bit tired. I told Mrs. Eastman about my blog. I gave her a hug. Mrs. Eastman is the school principal. I've known her since pre-k. She's nice.

We listened to Beethoven's 5th Symphony today. This is a little video of it. The conductor was a little off. He was hard to follow. But the orchestra sounded perfect! I just might like this symphony.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7jh-E5m01wY

We watched some really cool videos about PI and Tau. "Tau is defined as the ratio of a circle’s circumference to its radius, not its diameter and is equal to 2π." We got this from Khan Academy. I have no idea what this means yet, but I'm gonna learn.

To help me learn, we watched some videos. They were AWESOME! Here are a few:

This one is especially funny..

https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=FtxmFlMLYRI

This one long, but worth watching. This is one of my favorites...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=Av_Us6xHkUc

This one is SUPER COOL....
https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=OCYZTg3jahU

It's so cool, I made my own little dance! (If you don't watch any of the others, watch this one - William dancing..) I am rocking it out to the binary system. The binary system is a computer language. I have no idea what this means.....yet........
This is the Binary Shuffle...

I went outside when Lilly came home. We have fun. We went sledding, had a snow ball fight and played tag. Lilly was a bit bossy.

Lilly pulling me. She owes me more time!

Me pulling Lilly.

All and all, today was very tiring. Probably because we got a lot done. I get so tired when my days are full.

Oh, dinner was delicious! We have salmon - yummy! I even finished Lilly's. And Meggie was at dinner. Meggie is my favorite sister.... #favoritesister.

That's all for now.

March 5, 2014 A chess version of The Time War

Today I did some more spanish. I learned agua (water), pan (bread) and periódico (newspaper). And a new sentence is El niño bebe agua (The boy drinks water). I don't think I can carry on a conversation with anyone yet but I'm learning.

On the way to chess Mom made me do the multiplication tables. I did pretty good. It's getting easier (Grandpa, see this)

Chess was good! I played 2 big kids. I didn't get to play my usual opponent today. He was already paired up when I got there. There were 3 draws, no wins - at least I think. I captured a few queens. I didn't learn anything new. Chess is challenging. My teacher is a nice guy.

Ballet was fine. The parents came in and watched. I felt a bit excited. The other girls were sillier than usual, but they were paying attention. I can't believe I'm doing ballet. It really is fun. I also have a very nice teacher. She can control her anger. Ballet calms me down. I like going to Neglia Ballet. They have a nice office. Kim is in the office. She always makes sure she comes out and says Hi to me. The have very big studios there. And the girls in my class are full of energy.

Here's a couple videos of me dancing. Hope you enjoy them! Don't laugh too hard.....:-D

March 4. 2014 Not much going on today.....

Like I said in the beginning, not much happened today.

I multiplied by using Legos today. I both did and didn't like doing it. I liked it because I got to use one of my favorite things - Legos. I like new sets of Lego best. New Lego sets are very fun, cuz the first time you play with them, it's fun to figure them out.  They are also fun because you can use your imagination to build stuff after you destroy the stuff your supposed to build. I didn't like doing it because it involved one of my LEAST favorite things - math. I made math a (very) little more fun.

Math time! Counting by 4's.

I'm looking for same size Legos

I also did fencing today! I learned one new thing. I forgot what it's called, but you smack your enemies foil and then you attack. (Not to be confused with aluminum foil. A foil is a type of fencing tool, actually it the most important one that does most of the work. And it's one of the main weapons that a fencer uses. Foil is a homonym.)

This is from Sunday. It's a funny pic. Lilly is picking my up instead of me picking her up.

And last, but not least, a picture from Day of the Doctor. 10th and 11th. Someday I'll write about them.
Matt Smith and David Tennant

That's all for now.

March 3, 2014 A funny thing happened on the way from the lake...

This weekend I went to see Grandma and Grandpa! I ate. We had a party! WOOT WOOT WOOT...
I told Uncle Dave about Survival Craft. It's a new game I have. It's like Minecraft, except it's different. It has communities. Steve, the character, is marooned on an island full of horses and other animals, including wolves, lions and other defenseless animals. I even have a horse myself. I didn't give my horse a name yet. I had a good time at my grandparents house!

This morning I went to PT. I wouldn't take my boots off. So the PT teacher made me clean up the floor and take off my boots. She called my Mommy and made me stay later to get my work done. And I didn't want to. I usually enjoy it, but today I was very tired and off and I wanted to go to bed and I needed a hug.

I started taking an English test. It's a 5th grade test! I'll let everyone know how I do when I'm done.

I started planning my science project. I gonna do the turtle thing. I'm going to try to use solar power along with battery power to charge the zappers! (Dad says it's a security fence, I say it's a bird zapper. He doesn't think that's politically correct.)

Me and Meggie, my big sister went for a walk to the beach today. It was cold and icky. But, the sun was shining. I'll explain the pics.

We're walking to the beach

Still going to the beach. I see a truck.

Looks like an acorn tree.

It's a nut tree! I thought it was an acorn. The nuts look weird.

buds!

Three pine trees and a ball of light!

Looked these up - they are Daphne berries - POISONOUS

Elderberries - also POISONOUS

I'm glad there weren't any birds around. Cuz if they ate them they would die! (except for the ravens in Chima - I would want them to eat the berries.)
The lake shore. Look how much it changed! Now it's smooth with bumps here and there. Meggie fell into a hole and got her pants wet!

A dog followed us home! Curious was he! We call the dog patrol to bring him home. We had to bring him home with us. The dog didn't mind.

SELFIE

We're going to eat dinner now and watch a movie. It's an early bed night.

That's all for now.

Stay tuned 'til tomorrow!
